Project Title: Course Blueprint: Five Loaves Deli Onboarding Training
Tools: Canva
Time in Development: 40 hours
My Role: Instructional Designer/eLearning Developer
Client: Judy Owens, owner of Five Loaves Deli
Executive Summary: This course blueprint – or IDD – provides a thorough outline for Five Loaves Deli’s asynchronous onboarding training for new hires. It provides the client with a detailed summary of the plan to implement training serves as a contract so that both the client and instructional designer have a clear understanding of the agreement. The course blueprint clearly documents the instructional strategy, including activation of prior learning, a detailed synopsis of each module, and fully considered final application, final demonstration, and real-world demonstration on the part of learners. This course blueprint is representative of the Design phase in the ADDIE model in that it creates a detailed plan for the learner experience and method of instructional delivery.
Challenge: The challenge I was trying to solve was to provide the client with a clear and detailed plan to implement a training solution for onboarding new hires at Five Loaves Deli. Management at Five Loaves Deli shared time constraints and understaffing have prevented the development of training for new hires. As I conducted a needs analysis, one of the key challenges was interpreting the problem as presented by management compared to my understanding of the problem and providing a solution that satisfied all parties. Another important challenge I encountered was devising training prior to understanding the functionality and capabilities of the Articulate Storyline tool.
Solution: The solution to gaining client buy-in was to create a course blueprint, also known as an instructional design document (IDD). An added benefit is that it creates a shared understanding of the problem, goals, and plan for the training. My criteria included context for the project, project requirements, learning requirements, and course objectives. The course blueprint also includes activation of learners’ prior knowledge, outlines and outcomes for each module, final demonstration, final application, and real world application. This document was developed using my Design Workbook, where I had previously documented the learning objectives, whole problem, and scenarios. I was able to overcome the challenge of translating my Design Workbook into a course blueprint by carefully thinking through the design of each module.
Result: The results were positive in the sense that creating this course blueprint successfully helped me gain client buy-in. The owner was impressed with the detail put into the development of this document and agreed with the solution to the problem. During the development process, I was forced to think through each step and turning my vision into a reality in light of the time constraints, availability of tools, lack of budget, and my own familiarity with the instructional design authoring tool.
